Welcome to My Personal Page
My name is Dr. George Vincent and I have been an Orthopaedic Surgeon at St. Joseph’s Hospital for almost 30 years.
Over the last few years, Team Bone Heads have raised a number of funds to help support patient care.
Two years ago, we were able to raise $31,375 of funds to pay for a number of exercise machines which are presently being used daily in our Physiotherapy Department by our postoperative patients in order to facilitate their rehabilitation after surgery.
Last year, we were very fortunate in being able to raise $140,000 to purchase a Hanna Operative Table which allows our newest surgeon to perform hip surgery more efficiently and safer than on a conventional operative table.
This year, I am raising money for a completely different reason. I am looking at assisting our urology colleagues in the hospital in funding a specialized ultrasound and software program to allow targeted prostate biopsies.
A few weeks ago, a patient of mine called me and asked if I could assist him in facilitating a procedure that he required and was not available at St. Joseph's Health Centre. He was seen by one of the St. Joseph's Hospital urologists and was told that he needed an MRI of his prostate. This investigation had only recently started being performed at St Joseph's Hospital and, I am told by my urology colleagues, is the standard of care in diagnosing prostate cancer. After having his MRI, my patient then went to his urologist and was told that he had to go to St Michael's Hospital to have his prostate biopsy as our hospital did not have the proper ultrasound and specialized software to integrate the results of the MRI findings and allow for precise localization of the prostate abnormality. He was also informed that he would have to wait for a few months until he could be seen at St. Michael's Hospital. This delay caused him to be quite anxious especially since he was told that the biopsy would indicate whether the possibility of prostate cancer existed and he wanted to have the answer as quick as possible in order to make a decision on his treatment. I found this very upsetting in that St. Joseph's Hospital patients have to travel to another facility and wait an inordinate amount of time before they have results of their test.
I reached out to the Chief of Urology at St. Joseph's Hospital Dr. Chawla, and I discussed my concern with him regarding my patient and he informed me that the goal of the urology department is to be able to do the ultrasound guided biopsies at St. Joseph's Hospital but that the funding is not yet available to move this program forward. I am hoping that the "Bone Heads" can provide sufficient revenue to bring this plan to fruition as soon as possible in order to allow our patients the best care possible and avoid the anxiety of waiting and travelling to another facility to access their results in order to ensure a rapid treatment plan. We owe it to our patients.
I am hoping that you can join me on September 22th and ride with the "BONE-HEAD" group. If you are unable to make it, perhaps you can make a charitable contribution to the St. Joe's Cycle fund. A charitable donation can be made by clicking on the "Donate" bar.
Thank you again for your interest and hope to see you on the 22nd!!
George Vincent
