Everybody knows a hero

There are heroes in our everyday lives, people who go above and beyond without being asked to help out in their community. You could even call them superheroes. This Halloween season, you or a team can become superheroes too by registering to help fundraise or by making a donation to the Toronto West Halloween Fest today.

We have lots of heroes working on becoming superheroes for St. Joe’s. Meet Daniel, Max, Dylan and Laura below.

DANIEL

I was rushed to Emergency at St. Joeıs when I was four years old by my paediatrician Dr. Phillips. I had a unbearable pain in my arm that turned out to be Eosinophilic Granuloma a form of bone cancer. The diagnosis was that my arm needed to be amputated as the cancer was spreading. But as I was being prepped for surgery, my aunt asked if I was hungry and fed me which delayed the surgery to amputate my right arm.

Thatıs when a Dr. Robert Galloway came in to visit me while my family waited for the rescheduled time surgery. Dr. Galloway reviewed my file and X-rays and provided an alternate solution rather then to amputate the arm. He said he could save my arm by removing part of the bone. And he did. When I think back now, I know how life-changing that moment really was and I am forever grateful. St. Joe's is still my hospital - itıs where my kids were born.

THE TWINS (MAX & DYLAN)

"Dylan and Max are almost three years old now," says their Dad Matt Hall.

"Having twins has changed our lives and every day my wife and I are grateful for the care we had when they were born at St. Joe's. They were quite small so we spent a lot of time in the Neonatal ICU, and we'll never forget the amazing care we received. Their birth and the experience we had at St. Joe's inspired me to join the Foundation Board of Directors so I could give back in a way that will help others."

LAURA

Our family lives in the neighbourhood and has had to come to St. Joe’s many times over the years. It’s great that it’s so close. My Dad helps out a lot as a volunteer and a sponsor of the Toronto West Halloween Fest. I am doing what I can too.

For the last three years, I’ve raised money to support St. Joe’s by asking my family and friends to help, and by baking and selling cupcakes. My Dad, Mom, brother Andrew and myself‎ are back at it this year to support the Toronto West Halloween Fest. It is going to be so much fun.
